Vintage Photograph 2014.5

1940s woman Ila

1940s Portrait of Ila This week for Throwback Thursday #tbt we meet Ila. Based on her hairstyle I’m dating this to sometime in the 1940s. There is no other information on this vintage photograph. I just love her hair. I wish I could pull off the same look without looking like a poodle. Time for some more practice on 1940s hair. If you too are interested in reproducing 1940s hair, this book has become my bible on the topic. 1940s Hairstyles by […]

Vintage Photograph – 2014.2

1930s woman santa fe

1930s Woman in Santa Fe, NM For Throwback Thursday we present a stylish desert woman from the 1930s. This photo was found at a local antique mall. We love how her dress is blowing in the New Mexico wind. The back of the photo is stamped “Lamme Photo Co. Santa Fe, N.M.” Behind her you can see a hand-built adobe wall, which is a common sight in New Mexico. And on her wrist a hand stamped silver bracelet which seems […]

Vintage Photograph – 2014.1

1940s vintage woman

This is beginning of what we hope will be a regular blog post every Thursday for Throwback Thursday (#tbt). The hope is to shine light on discarded vintage photographs of women. The images will have all been found photos, scanned and shared online for (most likely) the first time. 1940s Beauty Isn’t she beautiful? She was recently found in an Albuquerque antique mall. This hand-colored photo is straight out of the 1940s. There is no information on the back of the […]

Lovely day in the park

IMG_7221a

A few weekends ago we ventured out for a small performance at Hyder Park in Nob Hill as part of a fundraiser for our friends, Sage and Jared’s Happy Gland Band. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon for some live music and food in the park! We performed ‘All I Do’ and ‘Muskrat Ramble,’ both in a much scaled down way since we couldn’t all make it to the event. No performance can be problem free, and on this day […]

A Tribute to Carmen Miranda

Carmen Miranda - 5

This past weekend at Nob Hill’s Summerfest we debuted our newest routine, Chica Boom. The song was originally performed by Carmen Miranda in That Night in Rio (1941). We used a slightly different recording of the song for our routine. By doing a tribute to Carmen Miranda, our costumes had to look the part. With our soloist in a vintage mermaid gown and massive headpiece, the rest of us wore many ruffles and piled our own hair up high with […]

How to Throw a Great Gatsby Party, Part 2

Gatsby Party Paper Moon

Wow what a party! Thank you so much to everyone who came out to support us and revel in a night straight out of the 1920s! First check out a few photos from our party to see what how the night went.   Location: We were so lucky to be able to use the TangoXchange space here in Albuquerque. It’s a local tango studio located in a old brick walled, tin ceiling, store front right on Central Avenue (Rt. 66). […]

How to Throw a Great Gatsby Party, Part 1

Great Gatsby Party

We Sweet Jubilee Girls have been excitedly counting down the days until the release of the new Great Gatsby movie. Being released this past weekend, wouldn’t you know we had a performance the same night it opened? A few of us trekked to the movies over the weekend to see it even though we missed opening night. The costumes, the sets, the actors, everything was so spectacular. Even without the old jazz music, it was still quite awesome. Every time […]

The Rumble at Marble Brewery

Food Truck Rumble - Tears

Last Wednesday Sweet Jubilee dug out our glad rags, okay maybe ours are not so buried, to be part of Inhabitants of Burque’s Food Truck Rumble hosted at Marble Brewery. The theme of the rumble was 1920s/1930s. A live jazz band, Zoltan the Incredible and His Royal Two Man Pirate Circus Band, four local food trucks throwing it down by each serving an incredible meal paired with a brew by Marble, a fun photo booth (see us in the booth), us […]

Tokyo Boogie Woogie

Tokyo Boogie Woogie

The debut of Toyko Boogie Woogie Sweet Jubilee has been beyond busy in the past few months, and the next month is just more of the same. We wouldn’t have it any other way! We left off on our last blog post as getting ready for the big performance at the Albuquerque Museum. Our vintage selves were ready to go. Costumes made, props polished, and hair and make-up practiced. We entertained a good crowd that night with five routines. Our […]

Art Deco Ready

You'll definitely want to see our "fan" dance!

We are a very short two days away from our next performance, and if you follow us on Facebook there’s a good chance you’ve seen how much we’ve been promoting the event! We are so exciting we are dancing right out of our t-strap shoes! We have been feverishly sewing costumes, researching Art Deco hair, makeup, and fashion, and of course practicing our lovely dance moves. This past Sunday we had our first dress rehearsal. Seeing everything come together that […]
